Whether it’s down in New Orleans or the traditional Mardi Gras celebration in Mamou, nobody does it like Louisiana. Recently, the state of Alabama bought a billboard in New Orleans to say they do it the best. They had the very 1st parade. Let’s dive in a see who is the best.
Who Had The Very 1st Mardi Gras? Louisiana or Alabama?
Mardi Gras has been synonymous with New Orleans for well over a century: this year’s celebration, on Tuesday, marks the 160th anniversary of the city’s first parade. But Mardi Gras, sometimes referred to as Carnival (after the pre-Lenten festive season of the same name), has roots that can be traced back to Europe’s Middle Ages, far before the Big Easy was founded in 1718. French-Canadian explorers brought the tradition to the States just before the turn of the 17th century. In 1699, led by Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville, they made camp approximately 60 miles from present-day New Orleans and dubbed the site “Point du Mardi Gras” since that day, March 3, marked the celebration of Mardi Gras in Paris. New Orleans wouldn’t exist for another 19 years, however, and it’s widely believed the first New World iteration of Carnival occurred in a different territory under French control — in Mobile, Ala., in 1703.
That information came from Aric Jenkins of Time Magazine.
Who Has The Biggest Draw? Louisiana or Alabama?
In Lafayette alone, last year 47,000 people came for Fat Tuesday. In New Orleans, 1.5 to 2.0 million. In Alabama, a respectful 1 million. That’s actually more than I expected and not to not totally slam Alabama, lot’s of people say it’s more family oriented. However, I will say this-it is family oriented also on St. Charles St. in the Big Easy plus there’s so many other places in Louisiana that celebrated Mardi Gras so those numbers would grow as far as attendance. Just about every city or town has a Mardi Gras parade now. Even Baton Rouge has a couple of weekends that have parades here in downtown.
So without a doubt-when you talk Mardi Gras around the nation-most people know NOBODY DOES MARDI GRAS LIKE LOUISIANA…..
