CELEBRATE ‘READ AN EBOOK DAY’ SEPTEMBER 18!

Weekdays 3pm-7pm
Weekdays 3pm to 7pm

The East Baton Rouge Parish Library (EBRPL) encourages readers of all ages to curl up with their favorite page turners as often as possible, no matter the format! E-books have grown in popularity over the years, and have become a well-loved method by which readers enjoy a variety of titles. To highlight reading via e-books, the EBRPL invites the community to celebrate modern storytelling on Read an Ebook Day, this Friday, September 18!

EBRPL Can Help You Celebrate!

Your EBRPL’s collection of FREE e-books abounds for all ages, with titles in a variety of genres available from the Libby App powered by OverDrive, plus streaming platforms especially for kids including TumbleBooksScholastic Flix, World Book e-books and more. All you need is your Library card!

The robust OverDrive resource has evolved to one-stop shopping for adults who want to enjoy either e-books or audiobooks, because it now includes the audiobooks collection from RBdigital. Readers may also browse lists of suggested titles curated by EBRPL librarians in OverDrive. These highlighted lists currently include Best Sellers, LibraryReads Top Picks, An Antiracism Booklist, Let’s Go Back to 2019, and Underrated & Underread.

E-book circulation at the EBRPL has risen steadily over the past 15 years, with more than 4.6 Million e-books downloaded since we began the service 2005. In 2019, the downloads from OverDrive and RBdigital totaled 880,814 titles. Already in this year, we have recorded 671,891 downloads, and with the Stay-At-Home Order in March changing usage patterns, patrons downloaded 524,835 since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are on track to pass the one million mark for OverDrive downloads this year alone!

Patrons may download up to 15 items to their digital book shelf at any time; these e-books and e-audiobooks will never be late since they will return themselves on time. Patrons do have the option to return items early and thus, fill up their digital book shelf with new titles.

Not every title is available on EBRPL e-book platforms. Some authors and publishers choose to not make their titles available via OverDrive, which means individual readers must purchase books directly from them. Even though e-books are digital, they can sometimes be “out of print” and unavailable.

It should be noted that downloaded e-books mean that one book is available per person at a time, and just as with printed books, there are often waiting lists for popular or new titles. Patrons may have 15 titles on hold at any given time.

The Libby app makes it easy borrow a title, renew a book for more time, place holds on books that are not yet available to borrow, and even adjust the delivery date for those holds. The app also offers specialty features, and the e-book format allows patrons the option to adjust the font size, the brightness and contrast, depending on the device being used. There is even a font specially designed to make reading easier for those with Dyslexia.

The Libby app sends notifications to alert you when your book is coming due in case you need to renew, and since e-books turn themselves in on time, readers can enjoy no late returns, and no late fees ever!
