EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH – The Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge (BREC) will host a variety of family friendly holiday events throughout the parish. Participants of all events below should be prepared to observe social distancing regulations for the safety and security of all patrons.
Get into the holiday spirit at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo by taking our ZooLights stroll along the mile-long trail through the Zoo and check out more than 50 illuminated display sculptures of animals and traditional holiday displays now open through Dec. 30. The Zoo will again be partnering with The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank and every guest presenting a non-perishable food item, will receive a 50% discount from the regular admission price to ZooLights. ZooLights is open daily from 5:30-8 p.m., except on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day; grounds close at 9 p.m. Make your holiday plans now by visiting brzoo.org.
Welcome the holiday season with a unique nighttime family bike ride at Reindeer Ride on Dec. 4 from 5:30-8 p.m. BREC Outdoor Adventure staff and you will ride up the levee from Farr Park campground to downtown Baton Rouge for Baton Rouge’s Downtown Christmas Lighting Celebration. Participants will leave the levee trailhead and join in a colorful bike parade through the downtown area, partake in the holiday festivities, then return to Farr Park together. Grab a blanket or lawn chair, snacks and join us for a family movie under the stars as we celebrate the holiday season at two Let It Sneaux Movie in the Park events. Participants can enjoy The Muppet Christmas Carol (G) at Hartley/Vey at Gardere Park on Dec. 18 from 4-7 p.m. and The Polar Express (PG) along with food vendors, characters, music and more at Perkins Road Community Park on Dec. 19 from 4-7 p.m. Both events are free and open to all ages and abilities, however, space is limited and preregistration is required for the Perkins Road Community Park event. BREC Art’s monthly youth art classes, Saturday Morning Studios, is celebrating the holiday season virtually with The Art of Giving on Dec. 12 from 10:30 a.m.-noon. Participants of any skill level ages 8-12 will learn the elements of art while practicing new skills and creating a Christmas masterpiece. For more information or to register, visit brec.org/art.
Get ready for this month’s Virtual Adaptive Sunshine Social – Olaf’s Winter Wonderland on Dec. 18 from 6-8 p.m. Through a partnership with Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge, BREC is able to offer themed, monthly socials for adults with cognitive and developmental disabilities and their friends and family. Join BREC and the Main Street Pilot Club of Baker for Mingle and Jingle on Dec. 18 from 3-5 p.m. at the baker Municipal Building parking lot. This free holiday themed drive-through event is sure to be a festive occasion for all ages while enjoying the season safely in their cars, featuring a turkey giveaway and more while supplies last! Patrons can stop by one of the participating BREC parks below to bring home a special gift from us to you while supplies last. If you’re looking a fun experience for your children during the winter school break, BREC offers holiday camps at many locations throughout the parish, filled with friends and fun activities. Holiday Camps follow school schedules (School Schedules to be followed are City of Central, East Baton Rouge Parish Schools and City of Zachary). These camps offer a fun-filled variety of holiday themed recreational curriculum to include arts and crafts, passive and active games, socialization with peers and much more.
