While the majority of Americans respect science, a new study shows that those who are politically conservative tend to trust scientists less. Researchers from the University of Amsterdam observed 7,800 American participants and found that conservatives have less faith in scientific fields, even in non-political subjects like math. They write that this gap is “problematic because it breeds polarization and hinders the success of scientific solutions.” Researchers say that building trust across political divides could require more communication and engaging with people’s worldviews.
