Recently, a previously little-known e-commerce app has shot up in App Store rankings. But what is DHGate, and what is driving shoppers to download it? The Chinese app has connected buyers to manufacturers since 2004. While the app is typically used by merchants, more consumers are using the app to try to get around new tariffs on items imported from China. “There are still quite a lot of scammers, and there’s a lot of cases where people don’t get the product that they paid for,” Chinese e-commerce expert Arnold Ma said. “But when you do your research…you do genuinely get really good quality products.” However, consumers who order counterfeit goods could have their shipments seized by customs.
